The Home Depot is one of the most well-known home improvement companies in the world. Core to its mission is giving back to communities through the Home Depot Foundation and its partnerships with other community entities. In addition to home improvement expertise, volunteerism, sponsorships and goodwill donations, The Home Depot also provides grants to support community goals. A primary objective of the Home Depot Foundation’s grant giving is to assist families by building affordable homes and healthy, sustainable communities where residents have access to parks and green space.

Building Healthy Communities Grant Program

The Building Healthy Communities Grant Program through The Home Depot provides up to $2,500 in grant funding three times per year for projects that utilize volunteerism to improve the physical health of communities. Eligible applicants include registered nonprofits entities, public schools, and public service agencies. Successful applicants are awarded grants of Home Depot gift cards to purchase materials and tools to carry out their proposal. Eligible activities can include, but are not limited to, developing affordable housing units, improving energy efficiency or sustainability, landscaping, planting of native trees and designing green spaces.

Affordable Housing Built Responsibly Grant

Through the Affordable Housing Built Responsibly grant program, The Home Depot Foundation awards grants to nonprofit applicants to construct and preserve affordable, healthy housing units. While most of this program’s funding goes to organizations identified by the Foundation, a small amount of unsolicited grant funding is available each year. Successful proposals should include the construction, preservation or financing of affordable and healthy “green” housing for low- to moderate-income families. Eligible projects might, for example, make an impact on natural resources, minimize waste, protect against erosion, improve energy efficiency and water conservation, utilize environmentally-friendly materials and improve air quality. The program does not identify a minimum or maximum grant award range.

Youth Garden Grants Program

The Youth Garden Grants Program is a unique partnership between the National Gardening Association and The Home Depot to encourage youth to work in gardens and environmental habitats. Grant awards of $500 to $1000 are made to schools, youth groups, community centers, camps, clubs and other organizations that sponsor garden programs for children aged three to eighteen. Grants are provided in the form of Home Depot gift cards, Gardening with Kids gifts cards, and educational materials from the National Gardening Association. Successful proposals will incorporate an educational focus, nutrition connections, environmental education, entrepreneurship and/or the social aspects of gardening.
